News Summary:

The Toronto stock market surged almost 200 points Thursday as investors bought up commodity stocks for a second day, encouraged by a sharp runup in the price of crude oil.

Toronto's S&P/TSX composite index moved up 189.08 points to 13,539.22 after rising commodity stocks contributed to a 286-point jump on Wednesday.

The TSX Venture Exchange gained 29.93 points to 1,949.68 while higher crude prices and a weak American dollar took the Canadian dollar up 1.56 cents to 95.79 cents U.S.

"Given the significant rally in the U.S. dollar that has taken place over the last two and a half weeks, I think the market has gotten a little bit over extended here and we've entered into a bit of a corrective phase," George Davis, chief technical analyst at RBC Capital Markets, said of the U.S. dollar.

"For the most part, the main catalyst still comes back to price action in the commodity markets and with a substantial spike higher in oil today, we're seeing not only the U.S. dollar weaken off against the major currencies, but that's been a benefit for the Canadian dollar given the positive correlation between crude and the loonie."

Investors also took in news of higher inflation. Statistics Canada reported that higher energy prices helped send the consumer price index in July up 3.4%, which was in line with expectations and up from 3.1% in June.

Analysts noted that an 8.8% pop in natural gas prices was the big factor driving energy prices in the month.
American indexes closed mainly higher as energy companies advanced and early losses were pared in the financial sector.

New York's Dow Jones industrials moved up 12.78 points to 11,430.21.
The Nasdaq composite index fell 8.7 points to 2,380.38 while the S&P 500 index moved up 3.18 points to 1,277.72.
A weak U.S. dollar helped take the October crude contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange up $5.62 to US$121.18 a barrel. The spike in prices comes after oil fell sharply after hitting a record high of just over US$147 on July 11, closing just below US$113 earlier this week.

"I think oil prices are finding some sort of base," said Duncan Anderson, portfolio manager at MFC Global Investment.
"And we do have some issues going on now _ the U.S. dollar declining again on the back of (mortgage financiers) Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and this potential bailout."

Tensions with Russia about a deal between Washington and Poland to install a missile defence system in Eastern Europe _ seen as a threat by Moscow _ and the continued presence of Russia in Georgia also contributed to the bullish mood.

The TSX energy sector ran up 2.15% as EnCana Corp. improved $1.44 to $77.56 and Suncor Energy gained $1.89 to $61.78 and in New York, ExxonMobil ran ahead $1.54 to US$80.35.

There was more nervousness around financial stocks after an analyst from Citigroup cut earnings per share estimates for investment banks Lehman Brothers, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley on the likelihood of further writedowns.

"You're going to have everyone fearful of the unknown and fearful of bigger writedowns until we see some concrete evidence that the writedowns are slowing, (and) some evidence that U.S. house price declines are slowing," Anderson said.

The Toronto financial sector was well off early lows, down 0.5% with Bank of Montreal down 46 cents to $44.33 and CIBC gave back 90 cents to $58.43.

In New York, investment bank Lehman Brothers came back from an 8.7% loss to close down a penny to US$13.72 after being upgraded to Buy from Neutral at brokerage firm Ladenburg Thalmann.

The base metals sector was up 2.95% and HudBay Minerals was up 39 cents to $11.40.
The gold sector moved up 5.1% as the December bullion contract in New York gained $22.70 to US$839 an ounce. Goldcorp Inc. headed $2.16 higher to $36.51 and Kinross Gold Corp. improved $1.35 to $18.04.

Telecom stocks also provided solid lift as Telus Corp. gained $1.15 to $40.05.
In other corporate news, Nortel Networks Corp. shares were ahead nine cents to $6.42 after it said it has acquired DiamondWare, whose technology has been used in U.S. military tactical intercom systems, in a deal worth up to US$10 million.

On the TSX, advances beat declines 936 to 616 with 188 unchanged as 373 million shares traded worth $6.4 billion. (THE CANADIAN PRESS)

Geodex Begins Drilling At Five Mount Pleasant Targets

2008-08-20 14:02 ET - News Release

Mr. Jack Maris reports

Geodex Starts Drill Program on Five Target Areas in the Mount Pleasant Camp, New Brunswick

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--( Aug. 20, 2008) - Geodex Minerals Ltd. (TSX VENTURE:GXM)(FRANKFURT:G2W) (the 'Company') is pleased to announce that drilling has started on five tungsten, tin, molybdenum and indium prospects in the Mount Pleasant camp in southwestern New Brunswick. Some of these are historical occurrences and all have been explored and/or drilled by the Company in recent years. They generally surround the former underground Mount Pleasant mine which is host to two main multi-element zones of mineralization, the Fire Tower and North Zones.

2007 drill results from four of these target areas (MPW project) were discussed in a Geodex News Release of June 25, 2008. The four comprised Pughole, Kedron, McDougall Inlet and Pleasant Ridge. Readers are referred to this News Release for details of each of these prospects. Along with the development program at its Sisson Brook tungsten-molybdenum-copper project north of Fredericton (see the recent News Release of June 5, 2008), the richly-endowed MPW area surrounding the former Mount Pleasant mine has been a major focus of the Company's exploration efforts in New Brunswick.

As part of its 2008 exploration program in the area, the Company has planned 6000 m of drilling on the MPW project, starting immediately. Planned distribution of footage and sequence of drill testing will be as follows: Kedron Claim group (2 holes), Piskahegan West (4 holes), Pughole property (10 holes), McDougall Inlet (2 holes) and True Hill (2 holes). Hole targeting is based on previously reported drill results, complemented by 2008 gravity data, extended soil sampling programs and trenching. The newly-discovered Piskahegan West target area is a particularly promising 1 km by 2 km zone of multi-element soil anomalies with coincident gravity lows, thought to represent granite cupolas similar to those at the Mount Pleasant mine.

Geodex concluded a Participation Agreement with Teck Cominco Limited (TCL) in 2007 (see News Release of May 22, 2007) to ensure long term exploration of these and other targets in the camp. The agreement allows for a two-stage option arrangement whereby Teck Cominco can earn up to a 65% interest in any of the properties by spending an aggregate $21.5 million over a period up to nine years. Prior to Teck Cominco's election to initiate the first stage of the option agreement, it participated in a private placement to Geodex in 2007 and agreed to provide Geodex with a $1.0 million convertible note to advance exploration. This money will be drawn down in the next few months to fund the drilling program outlined above.

Background

The MPW land package (595 claims) was assembled in 2006 by virtue of independent staking and six option agreements to explore a series of showings and exploration targets in a 10 km by 20 km area surrounding the old Mount Pleasant mine. Most are historical occurrences dating back to the period preceding the brief operation of the mine in the mid-1980s. Geodex has advanced exploration on many of these showings and discovered several new occurrences since 2006. All are multi-element lode-style prospects containing combinations of tin, tungsten, molybdenum, zinc, copper and indium, in character similar to those seen at the former mine. A comprehensive suite of minor strategic elements is present in this camp, the most significant and valuable of which is indium. Normally a mining by-product, grades in the Mount Pleasant camp suggest this to be one region where stand-alone indium deposits are possible.

Warrants

Geodex Minerals Ltd. ("Geodex") announces that it is reducing the exercise price of 739,798 outstanding warrants from $1.65 to $1.15. The warrants were issued pursuant to a private placement in January, 2008 and will expire January 30, 2009.

The warrant exercise price amendment is subject to TSX Venture Exchange approval.

News Summary:
The Toronto stock market surged almost 300 points Wednesday as investors snapped up energy stocks after U.S. inventory data showed a bigger than expected drawdown of gasoline stocks last week.

New York markets revived late in the day to move ahead as the financial sector improved despite mounting worry over mortgage backers Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and investors found some relief from an earnings report from Hewlett Packard.

Toronto's S&P/TSX composite index advanced 286.29 points to 13,350.14 with all sectors in the black. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 18.02 points to 1,919.75, while the Canadian dollar declined 0.02 of a cent at 94.23 cents US as Statistics Canada reported that June retail sales met expectations, rising 0.5% on the month.

However, analysts pointed out that all of the strength was attributable to higher prices, particularly for gasoline. The volume of retail sales actually fell 0.4% in June, with much of the weakness concentrated in the auto sector.

The agency also announced that the leading indicator, a forecast of economic activity, was unchanged for a second straight month in July.

New York's Dow Jones industrial average closed up 68.88 points to 11,417.43, helped by Hewlett-Packard which reported a 14% increase in third-quarter profit and a better than expected fourth-quarter outlook. Shares of the Dow component ran ahead $2.47 to $46.16.

The Nasdaq composite index gained 4.72 points to 2,389.08, while the S&P 500 index moved ahead 7.85 points to 1,274.54.

The TSX energy sector ran up 4.5% even as U.S. gasoline inventories dropped by six million barrels last week, about double the amount expected. But data also showed a much bigger than expected runup in oil inventories last week.

The burst in the energy sector also came amid news that Newfoundland and Labrador has given the green light to the $5-billion Hebron offshore oil project.

And there were also reports that Berskshire Hathaway head Warren Buffett and Microsoft founder Bill Gates were touring the oilsands around Fort Murray, Alta., earlier in the week.

The September crude contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange was volatile following the release of the supply data and closed up 45 cents to US$114.98 a barrel after going as high as US$117.03 before the release of the data and as low as US$112.61.

The Toronto financial sector moved up 1.2% after falling earlier in the morning along with U.S. financials on a growing conviction that the U.S. government will have to bail out government sponsored mortgage enterprises Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.

Freddie Mac shares tumbled 92 cents to US$3.25 while Fannie Mae shares plunged $1.61 to US$4.40.
The sector has been weak ahead of the release of quarterly earnings by the big Canadian banks starting next week. Scotiabank was up 70 cents to $47.80 and TD Bank was ahead 73 cents to $59.73.

On the TSX, advances beat declines 868 to 671 with 202 unchanged as 331.3 million shares traded worth $6.4 billion. (THE CANADIAN PRESS)

News Summary:

A sharp selloff in bank stocks sent the Toronto stock market lower Tuesday, but TSX losses were limited by solid gains in energy and mining stocks.

Financials also led the way to a sharply lower session in New York following a glum report on investment bank Lehman Brothers.

Toronto's S&P/TSX composite index dropped 55.52 points to 13,063.85. The TSX Venture Exchange was down 21.91 points to 1,901.73 while the Canadian dollar advanced 0.29 cent to 94.25 cents US as Statistics Canada reported that higher demand for automotive products helped send wholesale sales up 2% to $45.2 billion in June, their fifth increase in six months.

New York's Dow Jones industrials fell 130.84 points to 11,348.84. The Nasdaq composite index moved down 32.62 points to 2,384.36 and the S&P 500 index lost 11.91 points to 1,266.69.

There were more jitters about the financial sector after an analyst at JPMorgan Chase cut his earnings estimates for Lehman Brothers because of a seasonal slowdown in business and continued weakness in the credit markets. Lehman shares closed down $1.99 or 13.25% to US$13.04.

Financials were also under pressure after former International Monetary Fund chief economist Kenneth Rogoff said that "the financial crisis is at the halfway point, perhaps."

He added that he expects "one of the big investment banks or big banks" to go under.
The TSX financial sector was down 3% as TD Bank declined $2.90 to $59 while Royal Bank lost $1.57 to $45.04.
"Canadian financials have to be treated quite differently, we're nowhere near the pain of writeoffs that have been endured by U.S. and European financials," said Vincent Delisle, portfolio strategist at Scotia Capital in Montreal.

"The real story of this summer is the U.S. dollar rally and commodity prices going down (which) has triggered some rotation out of resource stocks and into financials. So we've gone from a very dramatic oversold condition for banks to pretty much overbought conditions a few days ago."

Inflation worries were also on the rise after the U.S. Labour Department reported that rising costs for energy helped push wholesale prices up 1.2% in July, more than twice the 0.5% gain that economists expected.

The runup left prices for the past year rising at the fastest pace in 27 years.
"Maybe investors were hoping to shrug off the challenges of high commodity prices and inflation," said Jack A. Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank in New York.

"But now we find out that perhaps the inflation situation is worse than we thought."
The Toronto energy sector was ahead 2% as the September crude contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange gained $1.66 to US$114.53 a barrel after the dollar weakened against the euro and a rally in heating oil attracted new buyers into energy markets.

Mining stocks were also supportive with the gold sector ahead 2% as the December bullion contraction the Nymex closing up $11.10 to US$816.80 an ounce.

The base metals sector moved up 1.7% as Teck Cominco Ltd. improved $1.35 to $40.30.
Industrial and tech stocks were also weak.
There was also a reminder of the grim state of the U.S. housing sector as the government said that construction of homes and apartments fell in July to the lowest level in more than 17 years.

Housing starts came in at 965,000 on an annualized basis, down from a pace of 1.08 million in June. Meanwhile, the weak housing sector was a major contributor to a 24% drop in second quarter profit at Home Depot Inc. However, net income of US$1.2 billion or 71 cents a share beat analyst expectations of 61 cents a share.

On the TSX, declines beat advances 880 to 644 with 212 unchanged as 368.7 million shares traded worth $6 billion. (THE CANADIAN PRESS)

News Summary:

A broadbased selloff led by commodity stocks pushed the Toronto stock market more than 250 points lower Friday.
The S&P/TSX composite index tumbled 262.21 points to 13,096.7 as concerns mounted about a slowing global economy and the effect on oil and metal stocks.

The loss took the TSX's main index down 241.68 points or 1.75% for the week with finance, base metals, gold and energy stocks all lower.

But while commodities led the way downward, all TSX sectors were lower, save for a small gain in consumer discretionary stocks.

New York markets were mainly higher thanks to a sharp drop in the price of oil which deflected more grim data on consumer sentiment.

The Canadian dollar was up 0.38 of a cent at 94.43 cents US.
Statistics Canada reported that manufacturers' sales hit $52.5 billion in June, up 2.1% from May, with much of the increase powered by higher prices. It says petroleum and coal made the biggest sales gains, jumping 6.4%. Sales by primary metals manufacturers rose 6.1%.

New York's Dow Jones industrial average gained 43.97 points to 11,659.9. The Nasdaq composite index moved down 1.15 points to 2,452.52 and the S&P 500 added 5.26 points to 1,298.2 as investors were also reminded of the fragile state of the consumer.

The University of Michigan reported a slightly smaller-than-expected rise in consumer sentiment in early August compared with July, signalling that the average consumer remains
under pressure.

The September crude contract on the New York Mercantile Exchange fell $1.24 to US$113.77 a barrel after going as low as US$111.34 as the U.S. dollar extended its recent rally against major currencies. Prices had risen sharply Wednesday in the wake of U.S. Department of Energy figures showing a larger than expected drawdown of gasoline inventories last week.

But the main direction of oil has been down since hitting a record of just over US$147 on July 11 on the belief that economies around the world are slowing down, if not in recession. On Thursday, both Germany and France reported declines in second-quarter gross domestic product, their first quarterly decreases in years.

The gold sector was 4% lower as bullion moved below the US$800 level. The December gold contract on the Nymex closed down $22.40 to US$792.10. (THE CANADIAN PRESS)
